Moulds are metal “containers” which are shaped inversely to the item to be manufactured or “moulded”. Molten material is then poured into the mould such as plastic, aluminium or brass and cooled off to form the new item. It is called injection moulds because the molten material is actually “injected” through a nozzle operated with a screw to prevent a molten material from flowing backwards. Injection moulding is complex and defects are common such as shrinkage and warpage (warping).

Moulds are precision-machined by using modern computer technology. This has brought the cost of mould making down and allowed making several moulds much easier and faster. The two main methods used in machining are the standard machining method and electrical discharge machining (EDM). Computer numerical control (CNC) refined machining further by reducing errors while drastically improving the consistency and quality. This automation drives the machine tool that fabricates the mould by selective removal (carving out) of material from a solid block.
